Rising Damp-Damp Solutions In St Albans

Rising damp comes from contact between a wall and the ground where
soil, which normally has a high water content, will cause the wall to become wet. As the wall becomes wet hygroscopic salts are carried upwards from the ground. Water evaporates from the wall surface leaving salt deposits which cause damage to the wall finish and any decorations. This damage may appear as tide marks or bubbles

The height to which dampness rises depends on wall thickness and construction, but it rarely rises above one and a half meters.

Damp Proofing Treatment is carried out by repairing the existing damp proof course or installing a new one. This is done by drilling holes in a band around the affected area and injecting the walls with a fluid which stops capillary movement of water up the walls. Where salts are present in the plaster some plasterwork will often need to be removed and replaced.

Penetrating damp - Dry Rot in Hemel Hempstead and Hertfordshire

Penetrating damp at high level is typically caused by rainwater entering the building through a break in the construction such as broken tiles, cracked rendering or badly fitting doors and windows.
A damp patch on an inside wall or ceiling is often a sign and it may disappear in dry weather but if it persists mould will develop and in severe cases wood rotting fungus may occur. This can, if left untreated, turn into Dry Rot - very invasive and expensive to treat if left to spread.

Damp Treatment involves making the necessary building repairs to stop water ingress.Johnson Ellis surveyors, experienced in building construction will give correct advice if a building repair is the correct solution.

If water penetration cannot be prevented such as high exterior ground levels, a tanking system may be necessary. This uses a cementitious proprietary product from established UK suppliers. Alternatively reducing the external ground level by creating a narrow channel ( French Drain) around your property , may be your preferred solution. Our experienced surveyors will discuss your options during our free site visit.

Materials used by Johnson Ellis Ld are thoroughly tested and meet all appropriate British Standards.
Where appropriate a water repellent finish meeting BS 6477 may be applied.
